About TFT

The Tucson Federation of Teachers was chartered by the American Federation of Teachers in 1981 to serve the teachers of the Tucson Unified School District. In that year, TFT separated from the Pima County Teachers Union. PCTU has given teachers an opportunity to belong to an AFL-CIO teacher's union since 1955 in Tucson. TFT not only offers membership to teachers in the Tucson Unified School District, but also to student teachers in the Tucson area.

The Tucson Federation of Teachers exists to serve the interests of its members as determined by democratic processes at the local, state and national levels. TFT holds a seat on the Arizona Federation of Teachers Unions Executive Board as well as sends a delegate to the annual AFTU convention. The AFTU assists locals in organizing and defense of members. However, the most important roll of AFTU is lobbing the Arizona state legislature for the educational reform agenda set by the AFT. The Tucson Federation of Teachers is  proud to be a part of AFL-CIO and works closely and participates in community service and product boycotts.

Even though the Tucson Federation of Teachers is the minority teachers union in TUSD, TFT brings to it's members the strength of the American Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO.
